As parents, community members, and leaders, we all share a commitment to ensuring that our children have access to quality education in environments that support their growth and success. On November 5, 2024, Houston voters will have the opportunity to support a bond proposal that will fund much-needed new builds, rebuilds, and renovations across the Houston Independent School District (HISD). This bond focuses on creating the learning spaces that our students deserve, ensuring safe, modern facilities for early learners and high school students alike.

New Builds, Rebuilds, and Renovations: Expanding Opportunities for Our Students

HISD’s bond proposal addresses the urgent need for new schools and updates to existing facilities. Many of our school buildings are outdated, and some are in critical need of repairs or full reconstruction. By investing in these facilities, we are not just improving the physical environment of our schools—we are creating spaces where students can thrive.

One of the most significant components of the bond is the expansion of early childhood education. The proposal includes the construction of new PreK centers, which will create 4,000 additional seats for Houston’s youngest learners. Early education is critical to a child’s future success, and these new facilities will ensure that more children have access to high-quality, early learning experiences. Right now, only 41% of 3rd graders in HISD meet reading benchmarks, and only 38% meet math benchmarks. Expanding PreK access and providing students with modern, dedicated learning spaces will help address these gaps and give students the foundation they need for long-term academic success.

In addition to early education, the bond also includes funding for three new Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers. These CTE centers will provide students with access to cutting-edge training in fields that align with the evolving needs of the workforce. Currently, only 11% of HISD students graduate as College, Career, and Military Ready (CCMR). By giving students access to hands-on training and the opportunity to earn industry certifications, these centers will significantly improve students’ readiness for life beyond high school.

How the Investment Aligns with HISD’s Student-Centered Goals

HISD’s bond proposal is designed with our students in mind, directly supporting the district’s goals of improving student outcomes and preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Every new build, rebuild, and renovation is aimed at creating an environment that fosters academic growth, career readiness, and personal development.

Moreover, this bond is a step toward equity. Many of the projects included in the bond focus on underserved areas of our city, ensuring that students in every community have access to the same high-quality learning environments. This means creating schools that not only meet modern safety and technology standards but also inspire learning and achievement.

As a parent and community leader, I understand that the quality of our schools affects not only our children but also the entire community. This bond is an investment in our future. It’s about creating the kind of schools that reflect our commitment to student success—schools where every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
