STATE OF EDUCATION: Transform the Education System to Better Support Our Children

For far too long, our education system has failed to adequately support the most vulnerable among us—economically disadvantaged and educationally disadvantaged students. These failures are most evident in underperforming schools, where ineffective leadership, inexperienced teachers, and insufficient resources leave students struggling to reach their full potential.

As parents, community members, and advocates, we must ask ourselves: Are we on the verge of meaningful transformation, or will the status quo continue to marginalize our children and limit their futures?

The pressing question is whether there will be a fundamental shift in how we support our students or if the persistent inequities in our system will continue to define their educational experiences. By focusing on “Improving Student Outcomes,” we can begin to dismantle the systemic barriers that have long held children back. Their future—and the future of our communities—depends on our collective resolve to transform the education system for the better.

Transforming low-performing schools requires a high-level strategic approach, addressing the systemic issues that have long plagued our schools. This commitment to sustainable change must prioritize all students, particularly students who are economically and educationally disadvantaged.

The question now is whether school boards will FOCUS on the ‘main thing’—Improving Student Outcomes—or if school boards will revert to a lack of clear focus that has historically failed our children. The future of our most vulnerable students hinges on adopting strategic approaches, guided by effective school board governance and a collective resolve to create meaningful, lasting change.
