Our Children Deserve Better: A Call for Continuous Improvement in HISD

As parents and community advocates, we are united in one mission: to ensure every child in Houston ISD has the opportunity to succeed. The achievement gaps, lack of resources, and systemic inequities in our district are challenges we can no longer ignore. HISD’s plan is a step in the right direction, but our community demands action, accountability, and continuous improvement to make this vision a reality.

Achievement Gaps Must Be Closed—Our Students Deserve Equity

Data reveals wide achievement gaps, with Black and Hispanic students consistently falling behind. These are not just numbers—they represent children who are being denied a fair chance. We need HISD to prioritize resources and support for students who have been underserved for too long. Our students deserve a system that works for all, and we will hold HISD accountable to that standard.

COVID-19 Raised the Stakes—Our Children Need Support Now

The pandemic made learning even harder, especially for those already facing disadvantages. HISD’s recovery efforts must be swift, targeted, and transparent. Communities are ready to support these efforts - we expect clear communication and measurable progress to ensure our children are set up to succeed.

Addressing Systemic Inequities—It’s Time for Fairness in Every School

The reality is that HISD operates like two school systems—one that meets some students’ needs and one that falls short for many others. HISD must have a plan to help level the playing field. We expect HISD to take meaningful action, especially in underserved areas, to ensure that every child has access to quality education, no matter their background.

Preparing Students for Sucess —Building Skills for the Future

Beyond academics, our students need real-world skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and digital literacy. HISD’s vision includes these competencies, but we want to see them integrated meaningfully into the curriculum. Our children’s futures depend on an education that prepares them for the demands of tomorrow.

We are building a better future for every student in Houston.
