Why Community Collaboration Matters More Than Ever
Across Texas, special education is entering a new chapter.
Recent legislative and policy changes are reshaping how special education services are funded and implemented. While these changes are designed to strengthen educational opportunities for students with disabilities, they also create an important opportunity—and responsibility—for parents, guardians, educators, and community leaders to become informed.
Parents are a child’s first and most important advocate.
When families understand how the educational system works, they are better prepared to ask questions, make informed decisions, and work collaboratively with schools to support their children’s success. Communities also play an essential role by helping families access accurate information, trusted resources, and educational support.
At Discovering U™, we believe that improving student outcomes requires more than changes in policy. It requires informed families, engaged communities, and leaders who are committed to helping every child succeed.
This work reflects Discovering U™’s Seven Pillars for Change™, particularly:
Pillar IV – Engaging Parents and Communities™
Student success is strengthened when parents, schools, and communities work collaboratively. Families deserve access to information that enables them to participate confidently in educational decision-making.
Pillar V – Equitable Funding for Unique Needs™
Every child deserves access to the services, supports, and educational resources necessary to reach their full potential. As Texas implements changes in special education funding and service delivery, informed families and engaged communities are essential to ensuring students benefit from these opportunities.
Discovering U™, in collaboration with Disability Rights Texas, is inviting community organizations, faith-based organizations, civic groups, schools, neighborhood associations, and community leaders to help expand awareness and understanding of Child Find, special education, and family engagement.
Together, we can ensure that families have access to reliable information and meaningful opportunities to learn about the educational system and the resources available to support their children.
Improving student outcomes is a shared responsibility. It begins with informed parents and guardians, is strengthened by engaged communities, and is achieved through meaningful collaboration. Together, we can create the conditions that empower every child to succeed.
We invite your organization to join Discovering U™ in educating, informing, and empowering parents, guardians, and communities.
