Every Block Matters: Why School Board Elections Are Crucial to Student Success

In our communities, the foundation of student success is not just built in the classroom. It is built in boardrooms—by the decisions of school board members who set the direction, priorities, and policies that shape our children’s future.

The Tower of Trust: A Leadership Metaphor

Imagine the school system as a tower made of blocks.

Each block stands for something essential:

Trust. Communication. Vision. Accountability. Equity. Alignment. Student Outcomes.

Remove one, and the tower might wobble. Remove a few, and the structure becomes unstable. This is what happens when leadership is not focused, not aligned, and not grounded in values that truly support students.

When leadership loses focus on student outcomes, students bear the consequences—through underfunded programs, poor instruction, and a lack of meaningful accountability.

What Do School Boards Actually Do?

Most people do not realize the power school boards hold. They make decisions about:

  • What your children are taught

  • Which teachers are hired and retained

    How tax dollars are spent

  • Which schools are prioritized for improvement

  • How student progress is monitored and measured

A school board’s knowledge, skills, and mindset can either build a strong, student-centered school system—or cause it to crumble from within.

Choosing the Right Candidates Matters

When it is time to vote, do not choose based on name recognition or popularity.

Choose candidates who:

  • Understand the difference between governance and management

  • Keep the focus on student outcomes—not adult interests

  • Align policy and budget with clear goals

  • Engage the community but make decisions rooted in student needs

  • Monitor and evaluate progress transparently

Why Your Vote is So Powerful

In many school board elections, fewer than 10% of eligible voters participate.

That means a very small group is deciding the direction of your child’s education.

Do not sit this one out. Your vote is one of the most powerful tools you have to improve your school system.
